Good People Brewing Company cask-conditioned Brown Ale, August 4th

Oh, summer …

There’s not much going on in this edition of the monthly newsletter. Is this because it’s really hot? Are we lazy and ready for Fall? Have we wasted precious writing time watching cartoons and 80’s movies at the Capri? Well, actually, it’s all to blame. But don’t fret! The newsletter team will return refreshed and composed in September to disseminate more insightful information regarding El Rey, including food, wine and beer news and perhaps another El Rey history lesson or two.

If you have just started receiving our newsletters and are disappointed that we fell victim to the heat and sloth know as an Alabama summer, you can read our old newsletters and the soon-to-be award-winning "History of El Rey" essays by going to burritolounge.wordpress.com

Pilsners – The air-conditioning of beers

The History of The Lights, Part 2

People are inspired by many different things. Some are inspired by walking through a forest or garden. Others are inspired by reading books or watching children play. While building El Rey we found inspiration from mid-century car wash buildings and hub cap shops.

A new porch needed to be constructed at the burrito lounge before we opened in 1999. We thought it would be cool if it resembled a car wash building in Los Angeles. This car wash was near a taco stand that inspired the name El Rey. Both of these buildings shared common mid-century design elements of steel spires and fins.

El Rey LA 1El Rey LA 2LA Car Wash 1LA Car Wash 2

El Rey Taco Stand, Home of the Garbage Burrito, near USC, and two examples of mid century car washes, Los Angeles, CA.

To build the porch we needed a few good pictures of the car wash buildings. (This was before internet image searches) A friend reminded us of a car wash building on the Southern Boulevard, so we grabbed a camera and took off.

Montgomery Car Wash - Hub Cap shop

Hub Cap Shop, Southern Blvd, Montgomery, Alabama

The car wash was defunct and housed a hub cap shop. We took pictures of the exterior fins and then went inside to poke around. That’s when we were inspired to use hubcaps for lights. We purchased Plymouth hubcaps for the ceiling and Cadillac hub caps for the bar. A chisel and some marbles gave the hub caps a Southwestern-look and allowed for the right amount of light from colored bulbs to shine through.

Hup Cap 1Hub Cap 2

As for the porch, we decided to build something a bit more appropriate for the neighborhood. Building a porch that resembled a 1960s car wash in Cloverdale would’ve been as ridiculous as placing a water tower in the middle of a sidewalk in downtown Montgomery.

Farm news …

Red Root Farms has had an amazing year so far, and we have all shared in the bounty. Much of the food prepared in recent months at El Rey has used peppers, onions, potatoes and cucumbers organically grown a few miles south of Montgomery.

Their tomatoes are almost ready! So this month when you are enjoying a bowl of gazpacho or some salsa, you can thank our farmer Gary and the crew at Red Root Farms. All that hard work pays off.

You can visit the farm’s stand In Banks, Alabama. It’s located on Highway 29. Drop by if you are driving to the beach on 331 this year. It’s a few miles east of Troy. The stand’s phone number is 334-243-4072. They are open Tuesday and Friday from 10 until 6.

Free The Hops News

When Governor Riley signed the Free The Hops bill in late May, El Rey became Montgomery’s ambassador to Belgian and High Gravity beer. We were the first and only place in central Alabama to offer it these new beers to you.

We have built a terrific list offering you the best of what’s available, but not necessarily what we want. As new beers come to the state we will continue to edit our selection so it rivals the best beer lists in the world.

This month you’ll start seeing new beers in stores and other restaurants. Be adventurous. Buy and try the amazing new beers now sold in our state. But remember, just because it’s new or higher in alcohol doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be good or that you’ll like it. So, if you don’t care for one of the new offerings, don’t give up … try another! There are so many styles and producers in the world eventually you will discover what you enjoy. We encourage you to share your experiences. And if you have a favorite that El Rey doesn’t sell, tell us and we’ll try to fit it in!

Do you twitter? Get our updates so you’ll know what new brew is coming and when. twitter.com/burritolounge

Check out burritolounge.com for our latest beer list.

Good People Brewing Company cask-conditioned IPA – July 7

On July 7th at 4 o’clock we will tap another firkin, this time it’s an IPA dry-hopped with Vanguard and Centennial hops. Pints are $5.25

A firkin holds about 80 pints of unpasteurized, unfiltered beer that is naturally carbonated. This beer is specially made for us in Birmingham by Good People. It’s a real treat and sells out fast! If you love beer come see what all the fuss is about.

We tap a firkin on the first Tuesday of every month. Come on Wednesdays to see if there is any left. The nature of these beers change once tapped and can be fun to discuss with other beer geeks.

Pilsner, drinking pretty good since 1840

July and August are so hot, we should only suggest drinking water. But who would listen? Plus, you’ve probably been drinking water all day. Now it’s time for something with a little bit of flavor. Pilsners have a reputation of being watered down and flavorless. But now a couple of El Rey’s favorite brewers have come to the pilsner’s rescue. Enjoy!

North Coast Scrimshaw

Lefthand Polestar Pilsner

Bohemia

Sierra Nevada Summer

and possibly the return of Brooklyn Pilsner by the end of the month
